What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes a rash, with scaly itchy patches on the knees, elbows, trunk and scalp.
What causes Psoriasis?
While not yet fully understood, it is thought to be an immune system problem caused by infection-fighting cells attacking healthy skin cells by mistake. Researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play a role in triggering it off. The condition is not contagious.
Is Psoriasis a serious disease?
Yes , Psoriasis has the potential to turn deadly. The skin can peel painfully off in large, red sheets and will need medical attention right away. A certain type of Psoriasis, called Pustular Psoriasis, has a version that can be an emergency case.
How is Psoriasis treated?
Steroid creams or Topical Corticosteroid ointments are commonly used to treat mild to moderate Psoriasis. The treatment works by reducing inflammation which in turn slows the production of skin cells which reduces itching. Topical Corticosteroids range in strength from mild to very strong.
